Following the experience from the successful implementation of the MaXIMA 1st Training school in 2016, and recognizing the benefits of it, the project team invited distinguished experts in the specific field as guest-lecturers and further provided open access to the participants who attended the 2nd Training school on: Methods for breast tumour modelling and breast imaging. Around 50 participants from 11 countries attended the school lectures.
The 2nd Training School was held in Varna, Bulgaria from 12th to 14th July 2017 and was officially opened by the Rector of the Technical University of Varna, Prof. Rosen Vasilev, and Dr. Kristina Bliznakova, coordinator of the MaXIMA project.
For the purposes of the project implementation, there is a high need to increase the knowledge and skills in computer modelling of the breast of the project team. The training school made high contribution in this regards, and aimed at consolidating resources for improving methods for introduction of breast cancer models within the computer based breast phantoms.
The training school was organized in two sessions:
Session 1: Modelling of breast cancers and tissue classification
Session 2: Modelling of imaging techniques

Furthermore, during the first day afternoon session, an online webinar was held with the participation of the US experts Dr. Predrag Bakic from the University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Krastan Blagoev and Antonio Fojo from the Johns Hopkins University.
It is important to note that in addition to the educational effect, the training school had also impact to the scientific community. Gathering together so many people working in the same field, initiated a number of new collaborations.
In conclusion, taking into account the training school assessment by the participants, it is considered that 2nd Training school was very successful and highly evaluated.
Following the successful implementation of the 1st Training school “Advanced 3D Imaging for biology samples”, the MaXIMA action, funded by EU programme HORIZON2020, is organizing the 2nd Training school on:
“Methods for breast tumour modelling and breast imaging”
The duration of the training school is three days. The program includes presentations/ lectures from distinguished invited speakers, followed by open discussion between participants and experts.
The training school is organized in two sessions:
Session 1: Modelling of breast cancers and tissue classification
Session 2: Modelling of imaging techniques
All presentations will be given in English.
