The Technical University of Varna as a Coordinator hosted the 1st General Assembly Meeting (GAM) of the MAXIMA project, within the framework of the Horizon 2020 EU programme. The multidisciplinary nature of the project gathered around the table experts in several different fields – biomedical engineers, medical physicists, computer specialists, and medical doctors from Bulgaria, Italy and Belgium. The main idea underlying behind the project comes from Dr. Kristina Bliznakova, a senior researcher at the Technical University of Varna. The MAXIMA project aims at development of three dimensional breast cancer models for X-ray imaging research for testing of new imaging techniques. Such an emerging technique is the Phase-Contrast Imaging, which is based not only on the X-ray attenuation, but also on the X-ray phase change, arising from the diffraction and refraction effects during X-ray scattering. Phase contrast takes place at the boundaries between materials, whose refractive indices differ from each other, and aims to enhance the visualization of both, tissue and tumours outlines.
